About Us

Hi, I'm Loïs Talagrand 👋

I'm a software developer and language enthusiast based in Tahiti. I built Island Gorilla because I believe the best way to learn a language is through content you actually enjoy — not textbooks and grammar drills.

After years of using various language learning tools, I found that the most effective approach was simple: read a lot, look up words you don't know, and let your brain do the rest. The problem was that existing tools were either too expensive (monthly subscriptions that add up fast) or missing key features.

So I built Island Gorilla — a tool that combines everything I wanted: instant word lookup, YouTube video import with synced transcripts, vocabulary tracking, Anki export, and a clean reading experience. All for a one-time price, because I don't believe in charging people monthly for something they should be able to own.

The Philosophy

Language acquisition happens naturally when you engage with comprehensible input — content that's just slightly above your current level. Island Gorilla makes any content comprehensible by putting translations one click away. Over time, you look up fewer and fewer words, and your vocabulary grows without you even trying.

Why "Island Gorilla"?

Gorillas are intelligent, patient, and powerful learners. They observe, they adapt, and they persist. That's exactly the mindset you need for language learning — steady, consistent effort over time. Plus, every learner is on their own island of knowledge, gradually building bridges to new languages. 🦍
